Visiting scientist to focus on marine geohazard research and data

Dr. Phil Hill, former director at the Geological Survey of Canada’s Pacific division, is ONC’s latest visiting scientist. Hill has a long-standing connection with ONC—he was one of the original principal investigators of ONC’s inshore observatory project proposal and the Delta Dynamics platform—and is looking forward to using ONC data to advance his research on marine geohazards, including submarine landslides and related processes.

ONC hosts international ocean acidification workshop

ONC hosted an international workshop 7-8 February during which scientists and sensor developers discussed the importance of obtaining accurate and reliable data from ocean-observing systems for ocean acidification.

“We hold workshops like this to bring together the research and technology communities to accelerate the development of sensors needed for making critical measurements in the ocean,” says ONC chief scientist Kim Juniper. “We need ocean sensors to be more accurate and more robust so that researchers can make more progress in addressing problems like ocean acidification.”

The workshop featured ONC science...

A first anniversary for British Columbia’s community observatories

Coastal communities are facing a variety of rapid environmental changes. Real-time data from cabled observatories can be used by community members to make informed decisions about their coastal and marine resources.

In March 2016, Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) continued to push the innovation envelope by deploying three community observatories along the British Columbia coast: in Campbell River, Kitamaat Village, and Prince Rupert (Figure 1). After a year in operation, this first anniversary review celebrates the successes, challenges, and future for ONC’s community observatories.

Chinese Scientists Visit

On Monday, July 9, a delegation from the distiniguished Chinese Academy of Sciences came to Ocean Networks Canada as part of a mission to the U.S. and Canadian west coast. The Academy is the Republic of China’s highest academic institution in natural sciences and its top scientific and technological advisory body.

Led by Academy vice president, Ding Zhongli, and the director of the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology in Guangzhou, Si Zhang, the group of nine spent the morning...

Community Observatory for Brentwood College Now Operational

In spite of January’s stormy weather damaging their dock, Brentwood College School students in Mill Bay B.C. are now monitoring the seafloor with a small ocean observing system that may be destined for schools across Canada and around the world.

Ocean Networks Canada developed this new system with funding from Canada’s Advanced Research and Innovation Network (CANARIE) as a model for community observatories that can be adapted to a wide range of locations outfitted with instruments tailored to schools, museums, or other community needs.

One and half years in the making, the first community-based observation system went live in late December, with this handover to the school providing the opportunity to test...
