Ocean Tech Alliance Canada: A National Voice for the Blue Economy

As one of Canada’s 20 Centres of Excellence for Commercialization and Research (CECR), Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) works to bridge the challenging gap between innovation and commercialization.

One of ONC's goals as a Centre of Excellence is to strengthen domestic collaboration nationally. To meet this objective, in 2012 ONC’s Innovation Centre facilitated the creation of the Ocean Technology Alliance Canada (OTAC), linking Canada's regional associations to help grow the economic capacity of Canada’s ocean technology sector.

In December 2016, OTAC was formally incorporated as a national...

Towards a “Smarter” BC Coast

With thanks to the Government of Canada’s Western Diversification Program and partner IBM Canada, Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) today announced the latest development of its world-leading ocean observing technology, located off Canada’s West Coast.

Smart Ocean™ will build upon the NEPTUNE and VENUS subsea observatories with a planned expansion of five cabled ocean observing systems along the northern coast of BC and northern Strait of Georgia.

Coupled with ONC’s unique data management system Oceans 2.0, and in partnership with IBM Canada, the Smart Ocean™ program will use marine sensors and data analysis to enhance environmental stewardship as well...

Listening to Deep Ocean Whales

“We can’t get there but our technology can” ~ Jasper Kanes, Co-op student

Passive acoustic monitoring of marine mammals is a growing research theme on both the VENUS and NEPTUNE observatories.

UVic Co-op student Jasper Kanes works with the Ocean Networks Canada Innovation Centre (formerly Centre for Enterprise and Engagement, ONCCEE) to process passive acoustic data from their technology demonstrations. Together with John Dorocicz, Acoustic Systems Developer, the two “listeners” publicize the highlights from these data within relevant research communities.

Jasper and John are helping promote Canadian technologies, which is part of ONCCEE’s mandate as a national Center of Excellence for...

ONCCEE Facilitates Creation of National Ocean Technology Alliance

One of ONCCEE's objectives as a CECR is to strengthen domestic collaboration nationally.  To help meet this objective, the Innovation Centre has facilitated the creation of the Ocean Technology Alliance Canada (OTAC), linking Canada's regional associations to foster, promote and facilitate mutually beneficial ocean technology initiatives in Canada through a collaborative network of networks.

Initial OTAC members

Initial members of OTAC include:

  • Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) which is the non-profit society owned by the University of Victoria responsible for the management, development, promotion, and commercialization of UVic's research assets, the VENUS and NEPTUNE Canada...
