The global ocean community celebrates Innovation Canada's twentieth birthday

2017 is a big year for Canada: not only is our pioneer nation celebrating its 150th birthday, but the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is 20 years old this month.

Founded in 1997, CFI has invested $6.6 billion in state-of-the-art infrastructure and made possible 10,000 world-class research projects to date. Everything from databases, electron microscopes, and gene sequencers to large-scale digital networks, ocean research vessels, and world-class science facilities: all made in Canada.

Secret Lives of Submarine Gas Flares

We know that methane gas bubbles from the seafloor near our Clayoquot Slope study site (depth: 1250 m). But what is the variability of this venting, does it change over time, and what causes flares of methane bubbles to start, stop or shift locations? Where is the bubbling most continuous and where is it most unpredictable? These are questions visiting scientist Dr. Miriam Römer has been trying to answer. Römer, a research scientist with the MARUM Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen, spent the past 3 months working with Ocean Networks Canada staff scientists analyzing a large and disparate collection of data from Clayoquot Slope.

2013 EcoEvo Retreat

The EcoEvo Retreat is a conference that gives graduate students, undergrads, and post-docs the opportunity to share their research in ecology and evolutionary biology. Participating institutions include the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria. The 2013 conference took place November 1–3 at the Cheakamus Centre, in Brackendale BC, near Squamish.

Keynote speaker Dr. Julia Baum talked about “Ecological & Mental Resilience,” offering her insights on how to thrive in a science career. Some of her advice included the following: be persistent; recognize that your time is valuable; guard your integrity; and engage in science outreach. Slides from the keynote talk are available by clicking ...

ONC and Schmidt Ocean Institute Team up for Leading Science Research

The University of Victoria’s Ocean Networks Canada and the Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) are undertaking an expedition on board the $62-million research vessel Falkor, with researchers from Canadian universities studying low-oxygen, acidic waters that form naturally off the coast of Vancouver Island.

“This is an unprecedented opportunity for researchers to integrate the data gained from the sophisticated acoustic sampling and deep-sea observation tools on board the Falkor, with the scientific data streaming from the seafloor sites across our VENUS and NEPTUNE observatories,” says Dr. Kim Juniper, science director at Ocean Networks Canada.

Promoting Collaboration Between Canada and the UK

Ocean Networks Canada President Martin Taylor will be speaking to ocean science researchers and students at UK’s leading oceanographic research centre—the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) at the University of Southampton, on April 4, 2012.

In 2011, ONC and NOC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote research cooperation in areas of shared focus including: technology and applications of underwater vehicles, deep sea benthic biology, ocean biogeochemistry, sensor development and deep sea ecology.

Dr. Taylor will be providing an update on ONC’s programs and future plans, as well as discussing opportunities for future collaboration.

Our thanks to deep sea ecologist, Dr. Henry Ruhl...

Alliance for Coastal Technologies MOU

The Alliance for Coastal Technologies (ACT) and Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) have entered into a memorandum of understanding to partner in environmental sensor evaluations, focused on supporting technology transition into operations and providing independent performance information on diverse ocean observing instrumentation.

ACT is a U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) supported effort dedicated to fostering the development and adoption of effective and reliable sensors and platforms for studying and monitoring coastal, ocean and freshwater environments.  The three primary ACT services are: (1) a third-party testbed for evaluating existing and developing sensors and sensor platforms, (2) a forum...
