Ocean Properties

Oceanographers and marine scientists measure or observe attributes or properties of the ocean that allow them to interpret water or component or organism behaviour. Although Ocean Networks Canada cannot measure all required parameters, many instruments are available to provide useful data.

This section discusses the properties measured and provides links to the instruments that provide all or part of the information. Not all parameters are measured at all locations, and some locations have more than one instrument that will measure the same feature in different ways.

Bottom Animal Behaviour

Sometimes biologists have to see animals to understand their actions related to abundance, feeding, competition, and mating. Thus, a camera on the seafloor can often reveal...

Coriolis Effect

The Coriolis Effect causes atmospheric and oceanic circulations to veer from linear (straight) trajectories and is due to the rotation of the Earth. The figure below shows the rotating Earth, and what would happen to a projectile that is “launched” from point P (North Pole) towards point A. As the projectile travels, the Earth rotates underneath it, and observers at any location on the Earth would claim that the projectile veered from a straight line.

The Coriolis effect.

From the North Pole, all directions are southward, and the projectile is seen to veer to the right (which is to west). From the...

Measuring Currents

Two major currents on British Columbia’s west coast, the California Current and Alaskan Current, carry water south and southwest respectively. Within NEPTUNE observatory, currents are measured using ADCPs and acoustic current meters. Each location needs to be examined independently since local bathymetry and geological features can affect the water flow.

An ADCP attached to a platform prior to deployment.

VENUS CODAR Array Delivers Total Current Vectors

This image depicts the surface ocean currents in the Strait of Georgia, measured during a strong ebb tide. The currents, averaged over an hour, were measured using a CODAR (Coastal Ocean Dynamics Applications Radar) system. The VENUS CODAR system consists of two antennae, one at the Iona Wastewater Treatment plant, near Vancouver Airport, the other at the Westshore Coal Terminal, near the BC Ferries port at Tsawwassen. These are labelled in the image as “VION” and “VCOL”, respectively.

Methane Flux in Barkley Canyon

Wally the Crawler sits atop some gas hydrates in Barkley Canyon.

It’s hardly been a case of “all play and no work” for Wally the Crawler. Researchers in Germany and Canada have been making heavy use of Wally and the unique data this deep-sea crawler gathers among the gas hydrates outcrops of Barkley Canyon.

A recent paper published in the journal ...

Animated Radial Current Vectors

The CODAR station at the Westshore Terminal in Tsawwassen measures surface ocean currents using radio signals reflected off waves in the Strait of Georgia.

A second station, near Vancouver Airport, will be installed in the next month or so, after which it will be possible to resolve north-south and east-west components of the currents. In the meantime, with only a single station operating, it is possible to measure only radial current velocities–that is to say, only the components of ocean currents that are directly towards or directly away from the receiving antenna can be detected.

Strait of Georgia Surface Current Monitoring Station Online

The first of two High Frequency (HF) coastal radar Stations was successfully installed on Nov. 24th at the Westshore Coal Terminal in Delta, BC. The station is now monitoring radial surface currents within a 20 km range in the Strait of Georgia. The installation timeline happened to overlap with the onset of a strong winter storm. The engineering team managed to erect the antenna in strong winds, but were able to escape the worst of the storm by 2 hours.
