Science for public good: new World Data System International Technology Office opens at University of Victoria

Leveraging science and data for public good is at the heart of Ocean Networks Canada’s (ONC) work. ONC’s vision—to provide knowledge and leadership that deliver solutions for science, society and industry—took a big leap forward with a recent announcement to host the World Data System International Technology Office (WDS-ITO) at Queenswood, ONC’s new home at the University of Victoria’s Ocean-Climate Building.

Taking ocean data to the next level: custom web services for marine decision-making

With hundreds of instruments monitoring Canada’s ocean environment, Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) gathers the same amount of data as the Hubble Telescope. Turning a firehose of high resolution data into useful knowledge is the challenge of the century. ONC’s robust and sophisticated data management system, Oceans 2.0, is already recognized as a state-of-the-art ocean management tool for marine decision-making, and it’s about to get even better.

Oceans 2.0 is a versatile online tool that allows scientists and the public to access and manipulate data—including audio and video—from ONC’s hundreds of deep ocean and coastal sensors in real time, 24/7. Thanks to...

Fisheries and Oceans Canada partners for a sustainable and healthy ocean future.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is providing Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) with more than half a million dollars to organize its Pacific fisheries science, marine mammal and ocean data. This pilot project will use ONC’s powerful data management system, Oceans 2.0, to support science and make DFO data more open, accessible and user-friendly for their decision-making, stakeholders academia and Canadians. Oceans 2.0 is recognized by the International Council for Science as part of the World Data System.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of...
