Tilting at Boreholes

The W.M. Keck Foundation has awarded $1 Million to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) for a new geodesy observatory to be connected to Ocean Networks Canada and the Ocean Observatories Initiative Regional Scale Nodes (OOI RSN). This interdisciplinary project, led by Dr.Jeff McGuire and John Collins of WHOI, will allow scientists to monitor three Cascadia subduction zone segments off the coasts of Vancouver Island, Washington and Oregon. Along this subduction zone, the Juan de Fuca plate...

Earthquake Detected by Strait of Georgia Sensors

Earthquake 2011-09-09.

The Parascientific Pressure sensor located at our Fraser Delta site caught the oceanic signal of the local 6.3 earthquake of September 9, 2011 (12:41 PDT). The pressure sensor is located on a bottom mounted platform and samples at a rate of ~700 ms. The background trend is the rising tide, on which is superimposed the surface pressure signature of tsunami like waves “sloshing” about in the Strait of Georgia. The signal also shows up in other pressure sensors at this and our...

Samoan Tsunami Detected

When a devastating magnitude 8.0 earthquake occurred roughly 200 km south of the Samoan Islands at 17:48:11 UTC on Tuesday September 29, 2009, it generated a trans-oceanic tsunami that spread at jet-like speeds throughout the Pacific Ocean.

At 04:57:33 UTC on 30 September, roughly 11 hours after the earthquake, five of our newly deployed Bottom Pressure Recorders (BPRs) and one...
