“Ocean Sense” and Community Observatories

Coastal communities are facing a wide range of rapid changes due to a changing environment. Lack of up to date scientific data limits community members in their ability to make informed decisions about their own coast. The University of Victoria’s Ocean Networks Canada offers a unique solution for bridging this gap in environmental monitoring, community involvement and scholastic outreach through the community observatory. To complement the expanding community observatory network, Ocean Networks Canada is introducing an educational program, “Ocean Sense: local observations, global connections” that will be piloted at Brentwood College School in Mill Bay, British Columbia, and Kiilinik High School in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut during the 2014-2015 school...

New Online Learning Resource Listens to Orcas

As students in BC and across Canada return to school, Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) and Open School BC (OSBC) are delighted to announce the release of Shouting Whales, a new marine science educational resource for teachers and educators, that is available free of charge.

Aimed at middle school students from grades six to eight, Shouting Whales is a unique resource that brings together science, problem-based learning, multimedia, and advocacy for an in-depth exploration of the oceanic soundscape.

Exploring noise pollution beneath the surface of the sea

In particular, students are asked to think about the ocean from the perspective of the orca whale, an...

Bringing marine science to Canadian classrooms

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) and Let’s Talk Science are proud to announce the release of four new classroom marine science kits available free of charge to K-9 teachers across Canada.

ONC’s K-12 Ocean Science Activity Developer, Monika Pelz, has compiled three new learning packages, each tailored to a different age group, to update current Lets Talk Science classroom kits. These include “Budding Biologist“ for Grades K-3; “Wonders of Weather” for Grades 4-6; and “Tectonic Rocks" for Grades 7-9.  All of them explore their respective topics through a marine science lens.

The fourth kit, entitled “Budding Marine Biologist,” was created especially for Grades K-3 and may be an introduction to the world of ocean science for many young students.

Gifted Students Learn From Ocean Networks Canada Team

On a July morning, Ocean Network Canada staff met with high-achieving students from across Canada as part of a PEEL Summer Academy program hosted at the University of Victoria.

Ocean Networks Canada’s Natasha Ewing and Tom Dakin were invited to introduce ocean observatory science and technology to twenty students who are of grade nine age, but working at a university level. The students—many from the Ontario region— were taking part in a two-week West Coast Marine Discovery Camp, which included time to absorb the sites around Victoria while learning about first nations culture and some of the ocean-related programs offered at UVic and ...
