Endeavour expansion during Leg 1 of Expedition 2018: Wiring the Abyss

Following the successful completion of Wiring the Abyss Leg 1 aboard Canadian Coast Guard ship (CCGS) John P. Tully, the Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) team are busy preparing for Leg 2 of our annual offshore expedition to install and improve cabled observatory infrastructure, 21 July - 4 August. The upcoming 2-week expedition aboard exploration vessel (E/V) Nautilus will complete many of the installations deployed aboard CCGS Tully (Figure 1).

A summary of Ocean Networks Canada’s maintenance expedition in the northeast Pacific: Wiring the Abyss, Leg 2, 6-26 June 2017.

Big swells rock exploration vessel (E/V) Nautilus and cable ship (C/S) Cable Innovator during a tricky seafloor operation to lay three kilometres of cable at the Cascadia subduction zone (Figure 1). Over a kilometer below the choppy ocean surface, this fibre-optic cable connects a variety of deep sea sensors, including several accelerometers that will contribute to British Columbia’s earthquake early warning system.

Wiring the Abyss 2016 Leg 1 - Summary and Highlights

The first leg of Ocean Networks Canada’s 2016 offshore Wiring the Abyss expedition was a landmark success, a fitting tribute to the organization’s tenth anniversary. Round-the-clock ship operations were conducted at four of the five NEPTUNE node locations aboard the exploration vessel E/V Nautilus. The C/S Wave Venture conducted joint cable operations with the Nautilus from 12-27 May at three node locations. Both ships mobilized at the Victoria Ogden Point facility.

Explore the ocean depths—live—while ONC wires the abyss!

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) is poised to head out to sea on a month-long expedition with two world-class ships, to conduct annual operations and maintenance on the observatories off the west coast of Canada.

Both the exploration vessel E/V Nautilus, and the research vessel R/V Thompson will be providing a rare undersea portal to the Salish Sea and the Pacific Ocean, by way of remotely operated vehicles equipped with high definition video cameras.
