Prototype Equipment Design takes ONC innovation from concept to reality

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) and Prototype Equipment Design (PED) recently collaborated to design and build the world’s first low frequency calibration system for digital and analog hydrophones. The calibration system was designed to calibrate the most sensitive low frequency hydrophones on the market, Canada's icListen LF smart hydrophones. These ultra sensitive acoustic sensors detect sounds that are below the range of existing calibration systems: earthquakes, underwater landslides, large baleen whales and the rapidly growing undersea shipping noise that can impact marine ecosystems and environments.

New Online Learning Resource Listens to Orcas

As students in BC and across Canada return to school, Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) and Open School BC (OSBC) are delighted to announce the release of Shouting Whales, a new marine science educational resource for teachers and educators, that is available free of charge. 

Aimed at middle school students from grades six to eight, Shouting Whales is a unique resource that brings together science, problem-based learning, multimedia, and advocacy for an in-depth exploration of the oceanic soundscape.

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) operates the world’s largest civilian observatory network for monitoring the oceans. Maintaining ONC’s nearly 900 kilometres of networked underwater sensors requires the cooperation of other major ocean stakeholders in the northeast Pacific, Salish Sea and western Arctic. The fishing industry and the Canadian Coast Guard are kept up to date on locations of infrastructure to minimize the risk of strikes by trawl gear or interference with safe navigation.

In the terrestrial world, we rely heavily on optics and our vision, and less so on acoustics and hearing. In the ocean, the opposite is true. In coastal waters, light only travels relatively short distances (5-20m), so marine animals use light for sensing only the very near-field environment, while sound can travel huge distances (1-1000km), and informs marine animals of distant features and events. Passive acoustic monitoring of marine mammals is a growing research theme on both the VENUS and NEPTUNE observatories.

UVic Co-op student Jasper Kanes works with the Ocean Networks Canada Innovation Centre (formerly Centre for Enterprise and Engagement, ONCCEE) to process passive acoustic data from their technology demonstrations.
