Three weeks late: Cambridge Bay sea ice freeze-up 2020

Figure 1. Sea ice forming on the shores of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut

Ocean Networks Canada’s (ONC) cabled observatory in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut has been gathering real-time oceanographic data since 2012. This year, the data reveals that sea ice freeze-up occurred on 27 October, the latest date in eight years of monitoring the Arctic Ocean. By comparison, since 2012 the mean or average date of freeze-up is 5 October, a full three weeks earlier than 2020.

Northward Ho! (2014)

Return to Cambridge Bay

In September 2012, Ocean Networks Canada installed a cabled community observatory in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut—the first of its kind to be installed in Canada’s North.

Each year, ONC teams travel to this northern hamlet for an important maintenance expedition to clean and upgrade the observatory infrastructure and instruments. It’s also a great opportunity to reconnect with the residents of Cambridge Bay.

Right now, members of our engineering, science and outreach teams are busy preparing for our third visit, from 14-25 September.

Cambridge Bay Community Observatory Backgrounder

On 13 August 2012 the University of Victoria’s Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) was granted a research license from the Nunavut Research Institute, with approval from the Nunavut Impact Review Board, to install and maintain a small, cabled seafloor observatory for five years in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. Installation was completed by the end of September 2012.

This community observatory, a scaled-down version of UVic’s seafloor networks, is the first location in Canada’s Arctic for year-round, continuous undersea monitoring of the northern environment. Its purpose is to offer science-based support for greater understanding and protection of fragile arctic marine ecosystems. Data streaming from the instruments support cutting-edge research as well...
