Community Fishers: enabling citizen scientists to collect their own ocean data

Oceanographic samples have historically been gathered by scientific specialists. Accessible and reliable technology is now putting data-gathering tools into the hands of citizen scientists, opening the door to innovative new approaches to coastal monitoring.

Ocean Networks Canada’s (ONC) Community Fishers app offers vessel operators, mariners, and fishers an opportunity to collect water column data by using a conductivity-temperature-depth instrument connected to a mobile device. The app simplifies the collection and transfer of oceanographic data to ONC’s data management portal, Oceans 2.0, for evidence-based decision-making (Figure 1).

Oceans 2.0: An Internet of Things for the Ocean

You’ve probably heard of the “Internet of Things”. It’s a connected network of everyday objects that talk to each other, such as cars, kitchen appliances and heart monitors. But did you know that the Internet of Things also extends deep underwater off Canada’s three coasts?

Think of it as a Fitbit for the ocean. Made possible by world-leading Oceans 2.0 data management software, Ocean Networks Canada’s (ONC) infrastructure is continuously monitoring the pulse and vital signs of our deep sea and coastal environments. Thousands of Internet-connected sensors gather real-time continuous data⎯everything from temperature, salinity, tides, seismic activity to underwater...

Sablefish study reveals citizen scientists are expert observers

Modern science is starting to take amateur scientists’ observations seriously. The impressive performance of over 500 citizen scientists who signed on for a study counting sablefish off the Tofino coast is heartening proof that we can all play a part in understanding the ocean, says one of the Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) scientists who co-authored the study.

That’s a key takeaway for World Oceans Day on 8 June, notes scientist Maia Hoeberechts, ONC associate director of user services (Figure 1).

“This study is about who can help science,” she says. “The theme for this year’s 25th anniversary of World Oceans Day is Our...

Taking ocean data to the next level: custom web services for marine decision-making

With hundreds of instruments monitoring Canada’s ocean environment, Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) gathers the same amount of data as the Hubble Telescope. Turning a firehose of high resolution data into useful knowledge is the challenge of the century. ONC’s robust and sophisticated data management system, Oceans 2.0, is already recognized as a state-of-the-art ocean management tool for marine decision-making, and it’s about to get even better.

Oceans 2.0 is a versatile online tool that allows scientists and the public to access and manipulate data—including audio and video—from ONC’s hundreds of deep ocean and coastal sensors in real time, 24/7. Thanks to...

Fisheries and Oceans Canada partners for a sustainable and healthy ocean future.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is providing Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) with more than half a million dollars to organize its Pacific fisheries science, marine mammal and ocean data. This pilot project will use ONC’s powerful data management system, Oceans 2.0, to support science and make DFO data more open, accessible and user-friendly for their decision-making, stakeholders academia and Canadians. Oceans 2.0 is recognized by the International Council for Science as part of the World Data System.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of...

CANARIE funding supports new tools for big data

An investment of $577,000 has been made by CANARIE to enhance access to and processing of big data collected by Ocean Networks Canada (ONC). ONC’s cabled ocean observatories support hundreds of underwater and on-land sensors that generate a huge volume of continuous, high-resolution data about the ocean.

Major Updates to Oceans 2.0

Ocean Networks Canada is pleased to announce two new data access features for the powerful data platform, Oceans 2.0: an optional login for most features and a data preview tool that enables navigation using tree-based selection.

Optional login access now applies to the following tools:

  • Data search
  • Data preview
  • Plotting utility
  • SeaTube
  • Device details

Some features retain the login, for example when creating and entering an annotation, creating a video playlist, saving a plot, and saving search results.

While login is optional for data access,...

Sharing Ocean Data

- Dr. Kim Juniper,  Director of User Engagement

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) operates the world’s largest civilian observatory network for monitoring the oceans. Maintaining ONC’s nearly 900 kilometres of networked underwater sensors requires the cooperation of other major ocean stakeholders in the northeast Pacific, Salish Sea and western Arctic. The fishing industry and the Canadian Coast Guard are kept up to date on locations of infrastructure to minimize the risk of strikes by trawl gear or interference with safe navigation.

In addition to the physical infrastructure, ONC has agreements with other ocean stakeholders related to protection of sensitive...
