Passive acoustic monitoring of marine mammals is a growing research theme on both the VENUS and NEPTUNE observatories.

UVic Co-op student Jasper Kanes works with the Ocean Networks Canada Innovation Centre (formerly Centre for Enterprise and Engagement, ONCCEE) to process passive acoustic data from their technology demonstrations. Together with John Dorocicz, Acoustic Systems Developer, the two “listeners” publicize the highlights from these data within relevant research communities.

What is a smart hydrophone?

A hydrophone is simply a microphone that is designed to work underwater. A smart hydrophone also has many of the capabilities of a recording studio built into it. It can digitize the sound, calculate the energy at each frequency, send the data out via the Internet and even send alerts if it detects a specific event such as a whale call. This new technology makes listening to the ocean easier than ever before, scientifically accurate, and it all comes in a package smaller than a water bottle.

ONCCEE Facilitates Creation of National Ocean Technology Alliance

Ocean Trade Mission to Brazil Receives GOA Funding

Community Observatory for Brentwood College Now Operational

In spite of January’s stormy weather damaging their dock, Brentwood College School students in Mill Bay B.C. are now monitoring the seafloor with a small ocean observing system that may be destined for schools across Canada and around the world.

Ocean Networks Canada developed this new system with funding from Canada’s Advanced Research and Innovation Network (CANARIE) as a model for community observatories that can be adapted to a wide range of locations outfitted with instruments tailored to schools, museums, or other community needs.

ONC Features in Canada Pavillion at AAAS

Ocean Networks Canada is pleased to announce the Observatory’s participation in one of the most widely recognized global science events, attended by several thousand of the world’s leading scientists and engineers and covered by top scientific journalists.

The American Association for Advance of Science (AAAS) 2012 Annual Meeting is taking place this year from February 16-20 at Vancouver’s Convention Centre—the first time outside the United States since 1981.
