Haida Nation and ONC partnership expands small vessel traffic monitoring in territorial waters

The archipelago of Haida Gwaii, home of the Haida Nation, is well known for its highly sensitive and rich ecological and cultural environments. Haida Gwaii’s rugged coastlines and remote location make it particularly vulnerable to marine traffic. As shipping and ocean-based industries continue to grow, understanding and monitoring vessel activity is an important step towards advancing environmental stewardship, resource management, and marine safety.

United States and Canada unite to protect the Arctic

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) applauds the United States and Canada in their resolve to embrace opportunities and confront challenges in the changing Arctic through Indigenous partnerships and responsible, science-based leadership.

On 20 December, President Obama and Prime Minister Trudeau issued a United States-Canada Joint Arctic Leaders’ Statement to launch actions ensuring a strong, sustainable, and viable Arctic economy and ecosystem. Actions include low-impact shipping, science-based management of marine resources, and freedom from the future risks of offshore oil and gas activity. Together, these actions set the stage for deeper partnerships with other Arctic nations,...

ONCCEE Facilitates Creation of National Ocean Technology Alliance

One of ONCCEE's objectives as a CECR is to strengthen domestic collaboration nationally.  To help meet this objective, the Innovation Centre has facilitated the creation of the Ocean Technology Alliance Canada (OTAC), linking Canada's regional associations to foster, promote and facilitate mutually beneficial ocean technology initiatives in Canada through a collaborative network of networks.

Initial OTAC members

Initial members of OTAC include:

  • Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) which is the non-profit society owned by the University of Victoria responsible for the management, development, promotion, and commercialization of UVic's research assets, the VENUS and NEPTUNE Canada...
