Teens dive into ocean science

It’s never too early to help young ocean scientists get to know the ocean. In April 2017, Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) hosted its fifth annual Ocean Science Symposium, an engaging two-day opportunity to inspire the next generation of ocean scientists.

Nicolai Bailly – Up and Coming Underwater Acoustics Engineer

Nico Bailly

One of our key mandates at Ocean Networks Canada is to find and encourage highly qualified personnel to sustain and advance ocean industry. At the Centre of Innovation, these young professionals-in-training come from a wide range of disciplines in engineering and science.

In September 2012, U Vic electrical engineering student Nicolai Bailly was brought on board to help develop the world’s first very low frequency (VLF) digital hydrophone calibration system.

Sensor Technologies Development Officer Tom Dakin had interviewed a large group of talented young students from the U Vic Engineering Co-op Office. But he felt...

Live Seafloor Camera Feed Used in Summer Class

VENUS seafloor camera used in UVic summer course.

During the last 3 weeks, the VENUS seafloor camera feed was used in the Biological Oceanography (EOS/BIOL311) summer course at the University of Victoria. Observing live conditions at 300 m depth in the Strait of Georgia was a rather unique experience to the students learning about ocean processes and marine biology in the coastal environment. Every morning...

ONC Takes Observatory Science to Bamfield

In early July, the Ocean Networks Canada education team travelled up island to the quaint seaside community of Bamfield to meet with undergrad students and educators from across western Canada. The team was invited by the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre to introduce the Observatory to students attending the summer academic session and also to teachers and educators attending an annual workshop.

Students come for the ocean experience

Located on Vancouver Island’s dynamic Pacific coast, the Centre is supported by five major Canadian universities including: the University of BC, University of Victoria, University of...
