ONC's best videos and photos of 2016

At Ocean Networks Canada 2016 has simply been the year of wow! We conducted our most complex Wiring the Abyss expeditions ever in the northeast Pacific, expanded the Arctic observatory, and installed a unique network of community observatories along the British Columbia coast.

R/V Sikuliaq

The R/V Sikuliaq is a 80 m ice-capable oceanographic research vessel, equipped with the Woods Hole Oceanographic’s robotic vehicle Jason that can dive to 6500 m. It hosts a team of 24 scientists and a ships crew of 22.

And while we continue to deliver scientific data, we are also building data products for safer marine shipping, monitoring the ocean’s health,...

EcoMUSICology: Howe Soundz

Since January, students from the Emily Carr University of Art + Design have been working on an audio/video project called EcoMUSICology: Howe Soundz. The project aims to raise awareness of the interconnected ecological, cultural, and recreational resources of the lower mainland. ONC’s Dave Riddell has been working with Sarah Van Borek to help her students incorporate Ocean Networks Canada video and hydrophone audio recordings into some of their works. On April 2, the students will launch an...

‘Dancing’ on the Seafloor—Saanich Inlet, 96m depth

The time lapse captures changes on the seafloor in Saanich Inlet at 96 metres depth as recorded by a VENUS camera in May 2012. Twelve days of still photos, taken by the DISCo camera, one every 30 minutes, were compressed into a 30 second video to show how animals move around in a natural setting in response to changes in the environment. During the time period captured in the video, a small phytoplankton bloom occurred at the surface of Saanich Inlet over the study area. The bloom eventually settled to the bottom and was followed by a migrating army of squat lobsters into the frame at the end of the video.

New Eyes For Wally

For the past two years, 2 benthic crawlers, Wally I and Wally II have served alternating stints helping scientists at Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany explore and study the uniquely dynamic environment of the gas hydrate outcrops in Barkley Canyon.

Each time we swap out one Wally from the seafloor, the other Wally takes its place on the seafloor. With each replacement we have seen improvements in the replacement crawler's instrumentation and capabilities. The currently deployed Wally I is no exception.

Spotted Ratfish, Hydrolagus colliei.

This image was captured from the Strait of Georgia Webcam video feed at 300 m depth. The spotted ratfish, Hydrolagus colliei, is a cartilaginous fish related to sharks and rays, and is the only species in its subclass found off British Columbia. They’re found throughout the Northeast Pacific down to 913 m depth, and feed primarily on small invertebrates including molluscs, crustaceans, echinoderms and worms. The individual in this image...

Life and Death at 300 Metres

A juvenile giant Pacific octopus, Enteroctopus dofleini, pounces on a passing tanner crab, Chionoecetes bairdi. Once the crab is secured the octopus retreats and will consume its meal in the safety of its den. E. dofleini is a stealth predator that primarily eats crustaceans, other mollusks and fish. This video was captured on the Strait of Georgia webcam at 300m depth.
