Marine imaging workshop advances ocean intelligence

Ocean Networks Canada hosted a group of scientists and students from around the world at the third Marine Imaging Workshop from 24-28 June at the University of Victoria.

The purpose of the workshop was to continue encouraging multidisciplinary communication between researchers, industry and engineers who perform biological, geological and computer science using underwater images (photos and/or videos) to discuss the challenges and future directions in marine imaging.

ONC hosts international ocean acidification workshop

ONC hosted an international workshop 7-8 February during which scientists and sensor developers discussed the importance of obtaining accurate and reliable data from ocean-observing systems for ocean acidification.

“We hold workshops like this to bring together the research and technology communities to accelerate the development of sensors needed for making critical measurements in the ocean,” says ONC chief scientist Kim Juniper. “We need ocean sensors to be more accurate and more robust so that researchers can make more progress in addressing problems like ocean acidification.”

Real-time radar data spurs international gathering

In June 2017 Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) hosted a WERA high frequency oceanographic radar workshop to discuss “first ever” real-time data that detected tsunami waves when Typhoon Songda hit the west coast of Canada in October 2016, triggering a tsunami alert on the WERA system.

The storm caused Tofino’s Emergency Program Coordinator Keith Orchiston to close beaches in the famous surfing location. “It is always a hard decision to close beaches, but that day we decided to play it safe. Real-time data from an instrument like the WERA radar (Figure 1) would support critical and lifesaving decision making for coastal communities.”

Brazil-Canada Partnership Workshop

Building on the success of the first Brazil-Canada joint science and technology workshop held last year in Rio de Janeiro, Ocean Networks Canada’s Centre for Enterprise and Engagement (ONCCEE) is hosting a three-day networking event, from June 11 to 13, to explore and develop potential partnerships in advanced ocean science and technology programs.
