Building TRUST to be FAIR: data stewardship for a sustainable ocean economy

Our society’s dependence on digital data is growing exponentially, along with our need to trust how and where that information is being managed and preserved. While consensus on ‘good’ data management and stewardship is beginning to develop and evolve, it demands constant diligence and on-going practice to keep up with the 24/7 demands of big data.

At this critical time, Canada is developing national infrastructure and services and best practices for research data management. These initiatives include open access to data, achieving FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) data and the launch of the CoreTrustSeal certification process for data repositories—places where large...

Oxygen Up, Temperature Down in Saanich Inlet

Feb 5, 2013

The figure shows the temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration from instrumentation in Saanich Inlet located at approximately 97 metres depth, for the period of 28 January-3 February 2013. The temperature decreases and oxygen increases, a sign that top-down and lateral mixing has finally penetrated our study area to bring upper water-column conditions down to our sensors and experiments at 97 m.

The Octopus of Saanich—Too Little Oxygen to Stay

Jan 28, 2013

In September 2012, a small Pacific Red Octopus (Octopus rubescens) temporarily moved underneath the VENUS seafloor camera in the Saanich Inlet study area. Installed at 96 m in Patricia Bay (Saanich Inlet), the camera (one of several connected to VENUS) is a unique tool that helps researchers study marine life in its natural environment.

Haida Gwaii Rumbles Picked Up on ONC's Hydrophone

Nov 2, 2012

From Alaska to Vancouver, residents along the west coast felt the powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck the Haida Gwaii archipelago at 8:04PM PDT, on October 27th, 2012. Ocean Networks Canada seafloor hydrophones also registered the low-frequency rumbles from this earthquake, along with the calls of humpback whales in the area.

Haida Gwaii Quake Monitored by NEPTUNE Canada

Oct 28, 2012

Data plots and maps.

Just after 8 pm on October 27, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of BC, at a depth of 17 kilometres and centred 139 km south of Masset in the Haida Gwaii region. Residents along the west coast—from Alaska to the lower mainland—also felt numerous aftershocks up to magnitude 5.8. No major damage or injuries have been reported. Although similar in size to the earthquakes in Japan (2011) and Chile (2010) this event represents the first regional tsunami tracked by the NEPTUNE observatory.

Haida Gwaii Earthquake and Tsunami

Oct 27, 2012

A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck central Moresby Island in the Haida Gwaii archipelago at 8:04PM PDT, 27 October 2012. Residents along the west coast—from Alaska to Vancouver—also felt several aftershocks up to magnitude 5.8. However, no major damage or injuries were reported. This was the largest temblor to hit Canada since 1949, when an 8.1-magnitude quake hit west of the Queen Charlotte Islands, in the same area.

Studying marine mammals vocalizations in the ocean has been an ongoing Ocean Networks Canada project. A number of hydrophones have been installed and tested on the VENUS observatory, both in Saanich Inlet and the Strait of Georgia. As identified by the research community, the main area of interest in this research is the Strait of Georgia. A busy marine traffic lane, home to the resident Killer Whales, the Strait also provides a hunting ground for transient Killer Whales.
