East Pacific Red Octopus

East Pacific Red Octopus.

This East Pacific Red Octopus (Octopus rubescens) was observed by our camera in Saanich Inlet. This octopus is found from the southern Gulf of California to the Gulf of Alaska. O. rubescens generally grows to a mantle length of 8-10 cm and up to 400 gm. Like all octopuses, it can change its color and texture; from a deep brick red, to white. Octopuses are thought to be among the most intelligent of invertebrates, and O. rubescens was the first invertebrate in which individual personalities were demonstrated.
