Our interactive presentations (virtual for Canadian classes and in person for schools in School Districts 61, 62, & 63) are aligned with the British Columbia curriculum and are designed and delivered by our team of BC certified teachers. • A Warming Ocean: Causes, Consequences and Solutions (Spans courses from Grades 7 - 12; 2 hours for in person, 4x 45 minutes session for virtual)
  • Examine the causes and consequences of global warming, culmination in a student-led discussion to empower students to build on their knowledge and propose actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. • Marine Biodiversity (Suggested for Grades 6 - 10; 45 minutes)
  • Join the ONC team to learn about the biodiversity of the organisms in and around the Salish Sea on Canada’s west coast! Students will learn about common intertidal creatures as well as deep ocean organisms.
• Exploring the Big Blue with Remotely Operated Vehicles (Suggested for Grades 6 - 10; 45 minutes)
  • Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) go where humans can’t! Learn about how Ocean Networks Canada uses these incredible machines for ocean exploration. Recorded videos and a suggested activity that students can try with simple recycled materials will round out this presentation.
• Loxiwé (Clam Gardens) (Suggested for Grades 6 - 10; 45 minutes)
  • Loxiwé is the term in the Liq’wala language of the Laich-Kwil-Tach people for what is known in English as “clam gardens''. Students will try spotting ancient clam gardens in beach photographs and learn how First Peoples’ practice cultivates beach habitat for clams. This presentation is based on the Ocean Sense module developed in partnership between Ocean Networks Canada, A-Tlegay Fisheries Society, and local knowledge holders of the Discovery Passage area near Campbell River, BC.
• Hydrothermal Vent Ecosystems (Suggested for Grades 6 - 8; 45 minutes)
  • The unique hydrothermal vent ecosystem shifts so much of what we know to be true about living organisms. From geology to ecology, students will learn about the adaptations of organisms at Canada’s first Marine Protected Area (MPA) at the Endeavour Hydrothermal Vents.
• Seismic Studies (Suggested for Grade 8 - 10; 45 minutes)
  • Being able to detect earthquakes and other seismic events is important on the west coast of Canada, an active seismic region. Students will use ONC’s online “Earthquake Data Dashboard” and hear accounts of the 1700 tsunami within Nuu-chah-nulth territory.
