ONC provides ideal conditions for a new neutrino telescope

The universe—not the sky—is the limit when it comes to science innovation at Ocean Networks Canada (ONC). In addition to the continuous, real-time ocean observing it was designed and built for, one of the great advantages of ONC’s deep-sea infrastructure is the opportunity it extends to all kinds of diverse, leading-edge research, including exploring our universe’s most abundant and hard-to-study ingredient—neutrinos.

Figure 1. Dr. Elisa Resconi—an astrophysicist at the Technical University of Munich whose research lies at the intersection of particle physics and astrophysics—attends a 2019 neutrino workshop at the University of Victoria’s Queenswood campus.

Summer 2021 low oxygen event in the northeast Pacific

Feb 4, 2022

While hypoxic or low oxygen events are known to occur seasonally in coastal bottom waters along the west coast of North America, 2021 was more severely hypoxic. The onset of low oxygen water was the earliest in 35 years, lasted longer, was anomalously low, and covered a larger extent, reaching north into Canadian waters where hypoxia is rare.

Real-time tsunami data from the Tonga volcano

Jan 19, 2022

Distance was no barrier to Ocean Networks Canada’s (ONC) capacity to provide real-time critical data about the tsunami risk following an underwater volcano eruption in Tonga on Saturday, 15 January 2022. Nine thousand kilometres from the volcano, the ONC offshore sensors gathered a variety of data, informing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center alerts that go out to countries and territories in the Pacific and Caribbean regions.

Expert Q&A on ocean-based carbon removal

Dec 8, 2021

A new report released by The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM)—A Research Strategy for Ocean-Based Carbon Dioxide Removal and Sequestration—looks at a variety of technologies and assesses the viability and potential effectiveness. Those technologies range from nutrient fertilization to seaweed cultivation and even electrochemical approaches. Kate Moran, president and chief executive officer of ONC, was the only researcher from this side of the border on the NASEM study panel and illuminates how ONC research can both help with the carbon fight and contribute to a burgeoning and climate-positive blue economy that links aspects of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Haida Nation and ONC partnership expands small vessel traffic monitoring in territorial waters

Jul 21, 2021

The archipelago of Haida Gwaii, home of the Haida Nation, is well known for its highly sensitive and rich ecological and cultural environments. Haida Gwaii’s rugged coastlines and remote location make it particularly vulnerable to marine traffic. As shipping and ocean-based industries continue to grow, understanding and monitoring vessel activity is an important step towards advancing environmental stewardship, resource management, and marine safety.

Celebrating 15 years of ocean intelligence

Feb 5, 2021

Fifteen years ago, ONC made history as the world’s first large-scale, interactive, real-time portal into the ocean. On 8 February 2006, a large underwater telecommunications power bar—known as a node—was lowered to the bottom of Saanich Inlet’s coastal fjord off Vancouver Island, enabling a flow of continuous, real-time data to the surface for science, society and industry. This feat of engineering marked the dawn of the Internet-connected ocean, enabling us to advance our planet’s understanding of the ocean—or ocean intelligence—at a critical time.

Oceans link to climate change

Jan 8, 2021

Deep in the ocean off Vancouver Island’s west coast, a gas associated with climate warming is making its way to the surface. Nitrous oxide is a product of plankton decomposition, pulled to the surface in areas where deep-sea waters migrate upwards in what’s known as coastal upwelling. Where is it coming from? That’s a question that University of Victoria PhD student Brett Jameson is exploring, in collaboration with Ocean Networks Canada and the Canadian Healthy Oceans Network.

Tsunami Monitoring and Public Safety for At-Risk Coastal Communities

Nov 4, 2020

For an uncomfortable couple of hours on Monday, 19 October—following a magnitude 7.5 earthquake off the coast of Alaska—British Columbia coastal communities held their breath awaiting confirmation of a possible tsunami. Fortunately, the strike-slip earthquake caused little damage and the resulting wave was minimal, but the episode served as a poignant reminder of the need to prepare for tsunamis.

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) supports tsunami resilience in at-risk coastal communities by integrating high tech monitoring, real-time data and detailed geographic mapping into models for public safety.

New research explains why Saanich Inlet is good for the climate

Jul 31, 2020

Research that demonstrates low oxygen levels in the depths of Saanich Inlet might seem like concerning news; after all, marine life needs oxygen to survive. But on a planet facing climate change, this is also good news: without oxygen, the benthic organisms on the seafloor can't decompose, thus reducing the amount of carbon that cycles back to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, a powerful greenhouse gas. New research using ONC's cabled ocean observing infrastructure provides further evidence as to why this deep Vancouver Island fjord is a natural place that stores carbon, also known as a carbon sink.

Canada’s ocean intelligence gets a boost

Jul 21, 2020

A federal investment in Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), an initiative of the University of Victoria, will advance the infrastructure and scientific data required to grow Canada’s ocean intelligence for the benefit of society and a sustainable planet. The funding announced on Tuesday is awarded to UVic through the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (CFI) Major Science Initiatives Fund, which supports a portion of the operating and maintenance costs of selected national science facilities across Canada. Funding ensures organizations like ONC continue to operate and maintain leading-edge ocean technology and data infrastructure.
