Expeditions

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) embarks on Wiring the Abyss expeditions several times every year to recover and install instruments, lay cables, do surveys and gather samples

To maintain and service the world’s most advanced cabled ocean observatories, ONC routinely schedules expeditions on major oceanographic vessels, such as CCGS John P. Tully, R/V Thomas G. Thompson and E/V Nautilus). During these expeditions our engineering and technical staff use remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to recover, deploy, and connect instrument systems to the observatories. In addition, scientific samples are often collected for sensor calibration and site characterization. Depending on the ship schedules, we make every effort to service each observatory site at least once per year, during three or four separate expeditions between March and October.
