The word 'Kitamaat,' meaning people of the snow, comes from the Tsimshian people, who originate from the Prince Rupert and Metlakatla areas. The Kitamaat Village - Haisla Territory Community Observatory shore station is located along the waterfront in the village. As coastal communities face a wide range of rapid environmental changes, real-time data from cabled observatories can be used by community members when making informed decisions about their coastal and marine resources.
